Week-in-review: Weekend Box Office, Benioff and Weiss Tackle The Three-Body Problem, And The X-Files Animated Series

New Mutants Exposes Viewers to Mutated Covid-19 Virus

Stuck for three years in development hell, superhero/horror film New Mutants is finally out. Directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars), New Mutants features Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), Anya Taylor-Joy (Split), and Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) in lead roles. In its inaugural weekend, it grossed a bit over $7 million in cinemas. Boone wrapped up filming of New Mutants back in September 2017. However, 20th Century Fox wasn’t happy with his darker and edgier superheroes, demanding reshoots and repeatedly postponing the film’s release. Then Fox got gobbled up by Disney, and Boone finally finished his movie this March just in time for the global pandemic that closed most of the world’s movie theaters.

In the second place with $2,6 million is the thriller Unhinged featuring Russell Crowe (Gladiator), Caren Pistorius (Mortal Engines), and Jimmi Simpson (Westworld). In the third place of the last weekend’s box office is Bill & Ted Face the Music with $1,2 million. This long-awaited sequel to cult comedies Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey features Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter reprising their roles from earlier films as well as Brigette Lundy-Paine (Atypical), Kristen Schaal (The Last Man on Earth), and Samara Weaving (Ready or Not). Armando Ianucci’s (The Death of Stalin) adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novel The Personal History of David Copperfield is in fourth place with $475,800. And in the fifth place of the last weekend’s box office is the comedy-drama Words of Bathroom Walls with a bit over $441,000. All of this data comes from the Box Office Mojo.

Benioff and Weiss Developing The Three-Body Problem for Netflix

AVClub reports that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss (creative team behind The Game of Thrones) are getting ready to tackle an even more ambitious epic: cerebral science fiction trilogy The Three-Body Problem (or Remembrance of Earth’s Past) by the Chinese sci-fi author Liu Cixin. This is part of their $200 million deal with Netflix the duo signed last August.

First published in 2007, The Three-Body Problem tells a story following the events after humanity discovers signs of alien life in the universe. The novel was translated in English in 2014 by Ken Liu. It soon became a best-seller and won Hugo Award for Best Novel. Its sequels The Dark Forest (2008) and Death’s End (2010) were also translated in English. They expand the story of the first novel through time and space, from the 20th century to the heat end of the universe.

Benioff and Weiss will be joined by Alexander Woo, showrunner of the AMC’s anthology horror series The Terror: Infamy. An impressive list of the show’s executive producers includes Bernadette Caulfield (Game of Thrones, The X-Files), Rian Johnson (Knives Out), Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment, and Rosamund Pike’s Primitive Streak production company. Liu Cixin and Ken Liu will serve as consulting producers.

Fox Working on The X-Files Cartoon Series

Variety claims FOX is developing an animated TV series set in the universe of The X-Files. Its current title is The X-Files: Albuquerque. This cartoon show would focus on misfit FBI agents investigating X-Files cases so silly and strange not even Fox Mulder and Dana Scully are interested in them.

The X-Files creator Chris Carter will executive produce this project alongside Gabe Rotter, who worked on the show’s 2016 revival on Fox. Rocky Russo and Jeremy Sosenko will serve as writers. They previously collaborated on the feature film Movie 43 as well on shows like Brickleberry and Paradise PD. There is no information will David Duchovny or Gillian Anderson participate in the project in any capacity.

Science fiction horror series The X-Files premiered on FOX on September 10, 1993. The spooky adventures of a team of FBI agents investigating urban legends and conspiracy theories drew audiences all over the world. The X-Files aired for eleven seasons and over two hundred episodes. It also spawned two feature films – The X-Files and The X-Files: I Want to Believe – as well as two spin-off shows – Millennium and The Lone Gunmen.
