Walmart to Convert Parking Spaces into Drive-In Cinemas

Over the past few months, we’ve been reporting about the troubles of the US movie theaters. Cinema chains like AMC and Regal had to shut down in March due to the growing pandemic of COVID-19. A lone silver lining have been drive-in cinemas: only movie theaters in the country where everyone can enjoy films while still maintaining the social distance. Now Slashfilm reports retail giant Walmart is teaming up with Tribeca Enterprises for a touring series that will temporarily turn Wallmart parking lots into improvised drive-in theaters.

Back in May, Tribeca announced its plans to team up with IMAX and AT&T to bring movies to “unconventional locations.” While the initial plan included mere five locations in the entire US, collaboration with Walmart will expand it to include 160 locations all over the country. The touring program will last from August until November and include 320 showings. There is currently no exact information about screenings, but they should be coming soon. Naturally, Walmart plans to cash in on this not only by selling concessions to the moviegoers but also by offering them an option for a curbside pickup of various “drive-in essentials.”
