So Steven Soderbergh, director of films like Ocean’s Eleven (2001) and Sex, Lies and Videotape (1989) shot a movie called Unsane entirely with iPhones.
Eh, looks alright..speaking from a technical perspective. I’m disturbed the quality looks better than a lot of horror I see streaming online. Those guys should really be ashamed of the themselves. There seems to be one primary perspective, centered at a roughly 45 degree angle which he looks like he sometimes changes up when the action kicks in. Maybe some panning while the talky scenes are taking place would make them seem a little more interesting, but then Soderbergh’s directing style has always been a bit placid. The story looks droll and comedian Jay Pharaoh Ride Along (2014), who from what I could tell had no lines in the trailer just seems to be there…like furniture. I have no idea what Juno Temple Killer Joe (2011) is doing, she seems to be channeling a meth head.
Perhaps this format will engender a new wave of alternative films for those who have had enough of what the mainstream model has to offer.
Unsane starring Claire Foy, Juno Temple, Aimee Mullins and Amy Irving checks into theaters March 23.
