SyFy ordered a 10-episode season of a TV series inspired by George A. Romero’s horror classic Day of the Dead. The series will be set during the first 24 hours of a zombie outbreak and follow six strangers as they group to survive. According to Variety, Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas will serve as writers and showrunners. This creative duo previously collaborated on Malibu Rescue and R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour, as well as on last year’s horror-comedy The Banana Splits Movie. Thomas also published horror novels Kill Creek and Violet.
The third film in Romero’s Night of the Living Dead series, Day of the Dead first came out in 1985. Its story takes place in an underground military base where scientists and soldiers struggle to come up with a way to domesticate zombies. A cult classic, Day of the Dead has its share of vastly inferior remakes and sequels. Unofficial prequel Day of the Dead 2: Contagium came out in 2005. In 2008 Steve Miner – director specializing in horror sequels – made a very loose remake of Romero’s film. Yet another remake called Day of the Dead: Bloodline came out a decade later in 2018.
