It’s been a month since Deadline reported that Walt Disney Studios and Sony Pictures failed to reach a new agreement about sharing the movie rights for the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man. In the weeks since, as corporations tried to achieve a new deal, they caused no small amount of fretting among the MCU fans.
Last Friday, a new, temporary agreement has been achieved. According to SlashFilm, the new deal guarantees Marvel and Disney around 25% of the profits of the third movie while Disney retains all merchandising rights. MCU mastermind Kevin Feige will produce a third Spider-Man film with Tom Holland returning as the titular super hero. Additionally, Spidey will appear in one other MCU film before heading back into Sony’s version of the Marvel Universe. The Hollywood Reporter adds that Jon Watts, who directed the previous two titles in the series, is in talks to return for the third Spider-Man movie as well.
The currently untitled third Spider-Man movie comes out on July 16, 2021.
