It looks like Sony will follow in the steps of Warner Bros., postponing some of its upcoming releases. Variety says Sony will push some of its films all the way until 2021!
Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife was initially scheduled for a release on July 10, 2020. But now the latest Ghostbusters film is coming out on March 5, 2021. Superhero/horror movie Morbius featuring Jared Leto as the titular living vampire has been pushed from 31 July 2020 to 19 March 2021. Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway was first postponed and now pushed from August 2020 to January 2021. And yet, these movies at least have a new release date! World War 2 drama Greyhound starring Tom Hanks has been postponed, with no new release date known. Finally, the infamous live-action adaptation of the Uncharted video games is suffering yet another in a long series of setbacks.
What all this shows is that the entertainment industry – or at least Sony – doesn’t buy the idea pandemic might blow over by April or even May. Considering the vast amount of money studios invested in these blockbuster movies, it’s understandable they want to play it safe.
