Sonic the Hedgehog Series Coming to Netflix

Netflix and Sega are currently developing an animated series about adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. According to SlashFilm, this officially confirms rumors that began late last year when Netflix Twitter account “accidentally” announced the project, only to have the tweet quickly deleted.

According to a release by Netflix, Sonic Prime will be a 24-episode “animated adventure for kids, families, and long-time fans” that “draws upon the keystones of the brand and features the ‘Blue Blur’ of video game fame in a high-octane adventure where the fate of a strange new multiverse rests in his gloved hands.” The series will be developed jointly by Sega and the Canadian media company WildBrain. Man of Action Entertainment will helm the series. This writer collective previously worked on animated TV shows like Ben 10, Big Hero 6: The Series, Generator Rex, Gormiti Nature Unleashed, and Ultimate Spider-Man.

There are currently no details about the show or the other talent behind it. What we do know is that Sonic Prime won’t tie in directly with the 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog live-action movie. That movie caused some controversy among Sonic fans after the first teaser trailer dropped in 2018. After the uncanny valley design of Sonic in the film become a meme fodder for the internet, Sony postponed its release, scrambling to update the look of the lead CGI character. When Sonic the Hedgehog finally came out early last year, it grossed over $300 million on a $95 million budget.
