Sam Raimi to Direct His First Horror Film in a Decade

Recently, we reported about Sam Raimi’s plans for a new Evil Dead movie. Now, AVClub says that Raimi has officially signed on with Columbia to direct an as yet untitled horror thriller. This movie most likely won’t be an Evil Dead sequel since the article describes it as a cross between Misery and Cast Away. That sounds intriguing!

At this stage, we know very little about this project. AVClub reveals that Damian Shannon and Mark Swift will write the script. The duo’s previous works include Freddy vs. Jason (2003), Friday The 13th (2009 version) and the 2017 Baywatch movie. While this doesn’t sound especially encouraging, Shannon and Swift did collaborate with Raimi on an unreleased project about the Bermuda Triangle. As for the studio, Columbia took its chance on Raimi back in the early 2000s by entrusting him with the first Spider-Man film. Its success led to two sequels. It is therefore hardly surprising that the studio would jump at the opportunity to work with Raimi again!

Over the last two decades, Raimi has been working on big-budget productions like Oz the Great and Powerful as well as on smaller-scale genre projects like the 2009 horror film Drag Me to Hell and the Starz horror TV series Ash vs Evil Dead. He is currently producing a star-studded anthology horror series 50 States of Fright for the streaming platform Quibi.
