Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049, Drive) will play the titular monster in The Wolf Man remake. Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum (Orange Is the New Black) will write the script based on a pitch by Gosling himself. Universal is currently looking for a director, with Cory Finley (Bad Education, Thoroughbreds) as the studio’s first choice.
First released in 1941, The Wolf Man tells a story of Harry Talbot (Lon Chaney Jr. – High Noon) who is attacked by a wolf during a visit to his father (Claude Rains – Casablanca). The wolf’s bite curses Talbot to turn into a werewolf every full moon. The Wolf Man came out at the tail end of Universal’s golden age of creature features and helped introduce werewolf into the modern pop culture. Universal remade the film as a gothic horror in 2010 with Benicio del Toro playing Talbot/Wolf Man.
The Wolf Man is yet another recent remake of Universal’s classic horror films. Back in February (before the entire world stopped), Leigh Whannell’s excellent horror flick The Invisible Man grossed over $126 million in cinemas on a $7 million budget. Universal is also developing a remake of a 1940 comedy Invisible Woman with Elizabeth Banks as its lead and director, Dracula with Karyn Kusama, Dark Army with Paul Feig, Renfield with Dexter Fletcher and The Monster Mash with Matt Stawski.
