Rogue One Writer to Write and Direct Cassian Andor TV Series

Variety reports that Disney just hired Tony Gilroy (Armageddon, Jason Bourne trilogy) to write the pilot for the planned Star Wars TV series about adventures of Rebel spy Cassian Andor. Gilroy will also direct several episodes of the show’s first season. This is the second time Gilroy signed on to work on a Star Wars project. In 2016, studio executives hired him to rewrite and reshoot Rogue One: A Star Wars Story because they weren’t happy with the work of its director, Gareth Edwards (Godzilla). A seasoned Hollywood veteran with over three decades of experience, Gilroy’s directorial debut Michael Clayton received Academy Award nominations for the Best Original Screenplay and Best Director.

The first news about the Cassian Andor TV series surfaced late last year when Disney announced they hired Stephen Schiff as its showrunner. Schiff previously worked as an executive producer on the critically-acclaimed spy thriller series The Americans. As for Andor, this character first appeared in Rogue One where he was portrayed by Diego Luna (Y tu mamá también). This currently unnamed Star Wars TV series will be an espionage story following Andor’s earlier life and exploits with Luna most likely reprising his performance. Cassian Andor TV series will premiere on Disney’s streaming service Disney+ sometime in 2021.
