The new X-files is pure trash and I don’t hear anyone talking about the latest 24 series…no one. So why is Fox Chairman and CEO Gary Newman yammering about a Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot? At the INTV conference in Jerusalem, Newman, while discussing the trend of bringing back ‘beloved’ series, mentioned that Joss Whedon’s Buffy The Vampire Slayer: “is probably the most ripe show we have for bringing back.”
“It’s something we talk about frequently. Joss Whedon is one of the greatest creators we’ve ever worked for. When Joss decides it’s time, we’ll do it.”
So why are these hacks du jour so quick to go with the reboot?
“In this world with nearly 500 scripted series, getting a leg up on marketing is an opportunity”
Brand recognition. Laziness. These jerkoffs are banking on the good will and viewership earned over years by the original series. They want to skip ahead and ride on the wave that was built on the backs of other, more talented people.
They want to cut corners.
They want to start at the front of the line.
“If you do it cynically, if you don’t have a great creative reason to do it, I don’t think it’s going to work.”
Smartest thing he’s said, but it still doesn’t excuse the practice.
With all the writers ( and spec scripts ) you chittering apes have at your disposal you can’t put together something new of interest? How about this you stunted baboons. Instead of “rebooting” or trying to repeat something you will never, ever be able to repeat. Why don’t you do what we have to do in a little place I like to call: ‘reality’. Move forward. Joss Whedon created an interesting Universe with a host of creatures and magical beings. You do not have to mess around with Buffy Anne Summers who was but one in a long line of Vampire Slayers. There are plenty of beings in that universe who have stories to tell.
Move Forward.
Tell new Stories with new characters.
You might fail, and yes that’s scary. But doing what’s right regardless of ones fear is what heroes do. Or were you not actually paying attention to the series you claim to love so much?
