GeekTyrant reports Oscar Isaac (new Star Wars trilogy) has been cast as Solid Snake in Sony Pictures’ adaptation of Metal Gear Solid. Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island) has been talking about his plans for a live-action adaptation for over the year now.
Metal Gear Solid is a critically-acclaimed and enormously popular series of action-adventure stealth games. The first installment – Metal Gear – was released by Konami back in 1987. Written by then-unknown Hideo Kojima, the game takes place in an alternate history where cloning, AI, and robotics became widespread during the Cold War. The player controls Solid Snake, a special forces operative tasked to destroy Metal Gear – a bipedal walking tank capable of launching nuclear missiles. Metal Gear Solid quickly grew into a franchise, spawning at least a dozen sequels, prequels, and spinoffs over the next three decades.
The idea for a live-action adaptation of Metal Gear Solid has been percolating around Hollywood for over a decade now. In 2012, Kojima himself announced Arad Productions had agreed to produce a movie alongside Columbia Pictures, with Sony in charge of distribution. Two years later, there were reports Sony was eyeing Jordan Vogt-Roberts to direct the film. In December 2019, Oscar Isaac first expressed interest in portraying Solid Snake in the movie. It’s been a long and winding road for this film. Let’s all hope it won’t suck.
