AVClub reports Netflix wants to produce a feature film based on Ubisoft’s action-adventure game Beyond Good & Evil with Rob Letterman as its director. Letterman’s previous movies include Goosebumps, Monsters vs. Aliens, and – most importantly for this project – Pokémon Detective Pikachu. That film grossed over $430 million worldwide on a $150 million budget, making it one of the most successful video game adaptations of all times.
First released by Ubisoft in 2003, Beyond Good & Evil takes place on a remote inhabited planet in the 24th century. A photojournalist named Jade (voiced by Jodi Forrest) goes on increasingly dangerous missions to help undermine the invasion by an extra-terrestrial army. The game was developed by Michel Ancel, best known for creating the Rayman franchise. Regrettably, the game was a commercial flop even though critics praised its mix of action, stealth, story-telling, and puzzle-solving. Over the years, Beyond Good & Evil gained iconic status among fans, and in 2017 Ubisoft announced it is working on a sequel.
There is as yet very little information about Beyond Good & Evil adaptation. It will be similar to Detective Pikachu, mixing live-action elements with CGI characters. We don’t know who will write the project, let alone who will be cast in it. In any case, however, Beyond Good & Evil sounds just like the niche, yet popular geek fare favored by Netflix.
