It’s official: Disney Plus has greenlit a TV show based on National Treasure movies. GeekTyrant says producer Jerry Bruckheimer is onboard, as well as Marianne and Cormac Wibberley – a screenwriting team that penned both National Treasure movies. Award-winning filmmaker Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding, Vanity Fair) will direct. The first season of the National Treasure TV series will consist out of ten episodes.
The series will reimagine the story from the perspective of Jess Morales, a twenty-year-old DREAMer. She takes over the torch from Benjamin Gates (played in the films by Nicolas Cage) to explore the secret history of the United States. We wrote about this in May 2020 when Bruckheimer confirmed that both the TV series and the third National Treasure were in the works.
For those of you who might be unfamiliar with this franchise, two National Treasure movies are family-friendly adventures, mixing Indiana Jones with the Da Vinci Code. Cage plays historian and amateur cryptologist Benjamin Franklin Gates as he searches for the legendary lost treasure of the Founding Fathers. Movies are silly but quite entertaining.
