Margot Robbie (Birds of Prey) will star in a live-action film about Barbie, Mattel’s iconic fashion doll. According to GeekTyrant, the crew behind the project is almost ridiculously over-qualified. An actress and Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Little Women) will direct the film. Gerwig is also developing a script alongside her partner and collaborator Noah Baumbach – another Academy Award nominee who made The Squid and the Whale and Marriage Story. They have all been pretty secretive about the project, with Robbie commenting:
“We like the things that feel a little left of center. Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,’ but our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted.”
But this isn’t the only motion picture project based on a beloved toy! Hyde Park Entertainment – a production company behind movies as varied as Machette and Blue Valentine – is looking to make a film about Rubik’s Cube. The (in)famous 3-D combination puzzle was invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik. His creation became both a pop cultural phenomenon and a frustrating toy gathering dust on bookshelves everywhere. So far, there has been no information about the cast and the crew, let alone what the movie will be about.
