The Hollywood Reporter says that Blumhouse hired director Karyn Kusama for its new version of Dracula. Jason Blum’s production company wants to make a contemporary version of Bram Stoker’s Victorian horror novel similar to its recent movie The Invisible Man. That film starring Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men, The Handmaid’s Tale) so far grossed $52.6 million domestically on a $7 million production budget.
Karyn Kusama has worked as a director for two decades now, filming interesting genre movies like Destroyer, The Invitation, Jennifer’s Body, and Aeon Flux. As for the Dracula movie, this is yet another joint project between Blumhouse and Universal. After its Dark Universe/Monsterverse failed in 2017, Universal decided to re-introduce its classic movie monsters through low-budget horror flicks. The studio is also producing The Invisible Woman film starring Elizabeth Banks (Brightburn), a Dracula spinoff Renfield directed by Dexter Fletcher (Rocketman), James Wan’s contemporary version of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Paul Feig’s Dark Army.
