Jordan Peele Developing The People Under the Stairs Remake

Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us) is working on a remake of Wes Craven’s horror film The People Under the Stairs, says GeekTyrant. Academy Award-winning filmmaker is looking to produce this film along with Win Rosenfeld (Twilight Zone, Hunters) through their company, Monkeypaw Productions. So far at least, there’s no clear sign Peele will direct or write the movie.

First released in 1991, The People Under the Stairs is a satirical horror movie. It follows two adult robbers and a kid who break into a house owned by a peculiar couple to steal their collection of rare coins. Instead, they discover a whole bunch of pale children imprisoned in the basement and end up trapped themselves. Upon its release, The People Under the Stairs was reasonably successful in cinemas, earning over $30 million on a $6 million budget. While it received mixed reviews initially, it gradually gained a cult status over the decades.

This isn’t the sole project by Monkeypaw Productions. The company also produced TV shows Hunters for Amazon, Lovecraft Country for HBO, and the most recent Twilight Zone revival for CBS All Access. Monkeypaw Productions is also producing Nia DaCosta’s Candyman sequel, most recently postponed until August, 2021.
