As someone who was old enough to be in college when the whole Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding kerfluffle went down, I’m curious to see if the whole affair will resonate with the younger generation. Personally, I’m over it. It was silly nonsense then, it’s silly nonsense now. A bunch of idiots engaging in idiocy. It’s the kind of story that appeals to the Jerry Springer, Maury Povich crowd.
So who knows…could be a big hit!
Based on the trailer it looks like they’re attempting to garner some sympathy for Harding, telling the story from her perspective, essentially the approach they took with serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Patty Jenkins Monster (2003). Whether Robbie has the chops to pull that off like Charlize Theron remains to be seen.
Margot’s clearly making a big push for an Oscar with this one…but I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if the Oscar went to one of her costars instead.
I,Tonya starring Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan, and Allison Janney skates its way into a theater near you December 8th.
