HBO Max Developing a New Show about Gotham City Police

HBO Max is looking to develop a TV series focusing on the Gotham City police force. The idea itself is intriguing: how do you combat crime in a city that’s not only corrupt but also full of supervillains and costumed vigilantes battling in the streets? After all, comic book series Gotham Central by Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka explored this premise by following cops, detectives, and even office temps. This series ran from November 2004 until April 2006.

The only problem is, as AVClub rightly points out, that Gotham – a TV show with pretty much same premise – just ended on FOX last year after airing for five seasons. This new show should allegedly tie in with Matt Reeves’ upcoming movie The Batman starring Robert Pattinson. However, HBO Max doesn’t make it clear how they will connect exactly, except by taking place in a shared universe (and these days, even that isn’t a sure thing). This currently untitled series will be penned by Terence Winter. Winter previously worked on shows like The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire as well as on Martin Scorsese’s Academy Award-winning film The Wolf of Wall Street.
