Godzilla vs. Kong May Be Heading to HBO Max

Godzilla vs. Kong may be coming to streaming services next May, reports SlashFilm. According to the article, Netflix already offered $200 million for streaming rights before WarnerMedia swooped in, disrupting the talks and initiating negotiations with Legendary Pictures. Warner Bros has a 25 percent stake in Godzilla vs. Kong. The studio wants to distribute the film on its streaming platform HBO Max as well as in cinemas in areas where Netflix isn’t available. One of these areas is China, where Godzilla is very popular.

This news comes a mere week after the studio decided its long-awaited superhero blockbuster Wonder Woman 1984 will premiere on Christmas Day both in cinemas and online. The studio’s decision may have been motivated by several factors, like the recent success of Disney’s Mulan remake on Disney Plus as well as the fact that cinemas won’t be reopening soon. Godzilla vs. Kong has already been rescheduled several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the final date currently set for May 21, 2021. A Warner Bros. spokesperson claimed the studio plans to release the film as scheduled. Considering the situation, this only makes sense if it simultaneously comes out both in cinemas and as VOD.
