BloodyDisgusting reports Warner Bros. just revealed the first look at its upcoming Mortal Kombat adaptation as well as some plot details.
The film will begin with a prologue depicting the origins of a feud between Hanzo Hasashi (Hiroyuki Sanada – Westworld) and Bi-Han (Joe Taslim – The Raid), long before they became Scorpion and Sub-Zero. The story will next move to the present day, focusing on Cole Young (Lewis Tan – Deadpool 2). A former MMA star, Young finds himself exploring his mysterious origins and meeting iconic characters from the original games like Major Jackson “Jax” Briggs (Mehcad Brooks – Supergirl) and Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee – The Meg). Meanwhile, Shang Tsung (Chin Han – The Dark Knight), a sinister emperor of the Otherworld, will send Sub-Zero to stop him.
Mortal Kombat has been in development for quite some time now. Horror filmmaker James Wan first signed on to produce it way back in 2015. This martial arts action film was written by Dave Callaham and Greg Russo and directed by newcomer Simon McQuoid. The filming began in September 2019 and ended just three months later, in December of the same year. The release date for Mortal Kombat changed several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Warner Bros. now plans to release it in cinemas and on HBO Max on April 16th.
