AVClub reports Dwayne Johnson is looking to reboot the sword & sorcery film Scorpion King in which he made his acting debut two decades ago. Johnson would help produce the movie through Dany and Hiram Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions. The project already has a screenwriter – Jonathan Herman, who penned the 2015 biographical drama Straight Outta Compton. It is currently unclear whether or not Johnson reprise his role as Mathayus – the barbarian thief who reluctantly leads an uprising against the cruel warlord who wants to conquer the ancient world.
Johnson made his name as a professional wrestler before moving to Hollywood, appearing on shows like Star Trek: Voyager. His first big break came when he played the horrible – and horribly CGI-animated – villain Scorpion King in Universal’s Mummy Returns. That film was a sequel to 1999’s The Mummy that was, in turn, a remake of a 1932 classic horror film starring Boris Karloff. Therefore, what we’re announcing here is a reboot of a spinoff of a sequel of a remake. And if that doesn’t spell creative bankruptcy, we don’t know what does.
Thanks to both his charisma and athletic prowess, Johnson quickly graduated to a leading role in The Scorpion King. Since then, he became Hollywood’s go-to star for all kinds of goofy action movies like San Andreas, Rampage, Skyscraper, Fast and Furious franchise, and the Jumanji sequels.
