Andy Serkis has won the coveted job as director of “Venom 2”. In recent days, Serkis has been one of the multiple directors in talks with Sony to direct the follow-up to the 2018 original. His competition included Bumblebee director Travis Knight as well as Rupert Wyatt who directed Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
With Ruben Fleischer, the director of Venom, busy in post-production of “Zombieland: Double Tap”, the directors position was left wide open. Venom, which brought in $213 million at the domestic box office and a whopping $855 million worldwide has been one of the most successful villain films of recent years despite critics distaste for the film’s direction.
It can certainly be argued that the first movie was a bit silly at times, but there is no denying that Tom Hardy, the actor responsible for bringing Venom to life, gave it a shot for a future. That future seems to have it’s best chance with Hardy reprising his role and Serkis at the helm.
Serkis, the talented actor, turned director has been responsible for some iconic roles such as The Lord of the Rings‘ Gollum and Caesar in the latest remake of The Planet of the Apes movies. In recent years, he has stepped behind the camera to direct films such as Mowgli and Breathe. His position at the head of Venom 2 provides some potential for greater success as the film heads into production.
