GeekTyrant reports that Amazon renewed its The Lord of the Rings TV series for a second season. For those of you at home, we’re talking about a show that hasn’t even been filmed yet, let alone aired.
It’s now been two years since Amazon first announced this project after buying the adaptation rights for $250 million. Drawing inspiration from J. R. R. Tolkien’s lesser-known works, The Lord of the Rings will be a prequel series set in the age when Rings of Power were forged. This July, Amazon hired Spanish filmmaker J. A. Bayona to direct the first episodes of the show and serve as one of its executive producers. The series will be filmed in New Zealand with the cast that includes Maxim Baldry (Years and Years), Markella Kavenagh (Picnic at Hanging Rock), Joseph Mawle (Game of Thornes) and Will Poulter (Midsommar).
The Lord of the Rings is far from the only epic produced by Amazon’s streaming service. There are upcoming adaptations of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time, Stephen King’s Dark Tower and Isaac Asimov’s Foundation. I guess when someone is as wealthy as Jeff Bezos, he can either give his employees’ longer pee breaks or burn his cash on science fiction and fantasy epics. Oh well.
