Amazon Prime has just renewed its sci-fi series The Expanse for its sixth and final season. This news comes just before the premiere of the show’s fifth season on December 16th. According to the GeekTyrant, there are already plans to start the production of the show’s final episodes early next year, in January.
The Expanse is based on best-selling space opera series by James S. A. Corey – a pen name adopted by writers Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. The novels take place several centuries in the future when humanity colonized the Solar System. The first novel in the series – Leviathan Wakes – was published in 2011. Four years later, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby adapted it into a TV series for SyFy. An ensemble cast featured Frankie Adams, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham, Cara Gee, Steven Strait, Dominique Tipper, and numerous others. By the end of the third season in 2018, SyFy canceled the show. Despite the eager fan base, The Expanse had modest ratings. However, then Amazon Prime jumped in, reviving the show for its fourth season that premiered in 2019.
Abraham and Franck are currently wrapping up the novels. Since 2011, they have published eight of them, with the final one – Leviathan Falls – set to come out in 2021.
