Filmmaker Adam Wingard is developing a script for a sequel to John Woo’s 1997 action film Face/Off, says Variety. Wingard – whose most recent film Godzilla vs. Kong is coming out this March – is working on the script with his frequent collaborator, screenwriter Simon Barrett. In his recent social media post, Wingard stressed he’s not developing a remake but a sequel.
Face/Off came out during the Hollywood stint of the legendary filmmaker John Woo, best known for his Hong Kong action movies like The Killer and Hard Boiled. The film features Nicolas Cage as a demented terrorist Castor Troy and John Travolta as an FBI Special Agent Sean Archer. After Castor ends up in a coma, Archer undergoes an experimental face transplant surgery to infiltrate Castor’s group and uncover the location of a hidden bomb. But when Castor suddenly wakes up, he steals Archer’s face. It’s all quite silly, of course, but it’s great fun, especially with Cage providing one of his signature over-the-top performances.
Together, Wingard and Barrett previously worked on several movies, including house invasion horror You’re Next, thriller The Guest, and a sequel to Blair Witch Project, titled Blair Witch. Neal Moritz will produce the Face/Off sequel for Paramount, with David Permut as an executive producer.
