Eli Roth to Direct Borderlands Movie

Horror filmmaker Eli Roth (Green Inferno, Hostel, Cabin Fever) has signed on with Lionsgate to direct a live-action adaptation of the sci-fi video game Borderlands. Also, Deadline reports that the studio hired Craig Mazin to pen the script. Mazin is an Emmy-award winning screenwriter behind the critically acclaimed HBO miniseries Chernobyl.

Borderlands is a first-person shooter role-playing game first published by Gearbox Software in 2009. In it, players take on the roles of Vault Hunters – adventurers exploring the savage frontier planet Pandora. They also shoot, stab and explode a variety of creatures, robots, bandits, and other assorted enemies assaulting them at every turn. Borderlands became incredibly successful not only for being fun but also due to its distinctively cartoonish aesthetics and over-the-top humor. It was followed by Borderlands 2 in 2012, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel in 2014 and Borderlands 3 in 2019. Last September, the total net revenue of this series stood at approximately $1 billion.

Avi Arad, a veteran film producer behind movies like Blade, Daredevil, Venom, Spider-Man: Homecoming and pretty much all of the X-Men movies will produce the film.
