While it is as yet unclear will Disney+ will renew its live-action Star Wars TV series The Mandalorian, at least one of its creators harbors no doubts about this. According to Entertainment Weekly, Jon Favreau is already working on the scripts for the show’s second season and plans to direct at least one of them. Furthermore, while the show’s season finale aired last Friday, Favreau teased the return of The Mandalorian on his Twitter page and announced its release date as autumn 2020.
And why shouldn’t he? A flagship series for Disney’s streaming service Disney+, The Mandalorian created plenty of mostly positive internet buzz. Compared to the shiny nonsense of J. J. Abrams’ Rise of the Skywalker, The Mandalorian was a breath of fresh air. The show deliberately scaled back the mythology and the scope of the Star Wars universe and, in the process, paradoxically made it feel bigger. Alongside Dave Filoni (Star Wars Rebels, Avatar: The Last Airbender), Favreau developed a series inspired not only by previous Star Wars movies but also by samurai films and spaghetti westerns. There is barely any doubt that Disney will wish to renew the series. The Mandalorian is most likely just a first of many live-action shows set in the galaxy far, far away.
