TheWrap reports that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the creative duo behind HBO’s fantasy juggernaut Game of Thrones, are developing another adaptation – that of the horror graphic novel Lovecraft. Set in the 1920s, the story re-imagines the life of the cult horror writer H. P. Lovecraft as if his horror creations were real. Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi will write the script while Karyn Kusama will executive produce the film. Kusama, Hay, and Manfredi previously collaborated on films like Destroyer, The Invitation, and Æon Flux.
First published by Vertigo Comics in 2004, Lovecraft was created by the Argentinean comic book artist Enrique Breccia, Keith Giffen (co-creator of Lobo) and Hans Rodionoff (comic book series Mnemovore). Combining fact and fiction, this graphic novel tells a story of Lovecraft’s peculiar life and upbringing, mixing it with his Cthulhu Mythos that secured him posthumous fame. Interestingly, Benioff and D.B. Weiss seem determined to tackle this adaptation, even though in August they signed a multi-million deal with Netflix. It was a deal so enticing they gave up on making a new Star Wars trilogy.
