Sony Announces Release Date for Spider-Verse Sequel

Last Friday, Sony announced the release date for the sequel to its CGI-animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse – April 8, 2022. This news was first revealed on the movie’s official Twitter account and then covered by websites like the AVClub.

This sequel is just one of Sony’s several projects proposed in the wake of the first film’s phenomenal success. Released in November 2018, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was produced for around $90 million and grossed over $375 million in cinemas all over the world. There was also talk about a spin-off movie focusing on three generations of Spider-Women that would include Spider-Gwen, Spider-Woman, and Silk. Finally, in April 2019, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller –who worked on the Spider-Verse scripts – signed a five-year contract with Sony Pictures Television to develop an animated Marvel TV series, possibly related to Spider-Verse.

Lauded for its animation, direction, and score, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse tells the story of Miles Morales (voiced in the movie by Shameik Moore) growing into the role of the titular super hero after he meets other Spider-Men from parallel realities.
