Variety reports that HBO pulled the plug on the proposed Game of Thrones prequel set in the early centuries of the Westerosi history. With screenwriter Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class) as its showrunner, the show was to feature Naomi Watts (The Divergent Series) and Miranda Richardson (Good Omens) in lead roles. S.J. Clarkson (Marvel’s Jessica Jones) directed the pilot episode.
However, this isn’t the only Game of Thrones prequel! According to the AVClub, this week WarnerMedia unveiled a slate of shows for its upcoming streaming service HBO Max. HBO Max confirmed it was producing another GoT prequel using George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood book as its basis. As we previously reported, this prequel chronicles the history of the Targaryen dynasty.
There were other announcements of note. Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl) announced he was developing two DC projects exclusively for HBO Max. While one of them uses the science fiction comic book Strange Adventures as its inspiration, the other will be a Green Lantern TV series. At the same time, Ridley Scott is directing the first season of a science fiction series called Raised by Wolves. Written by Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners), Raised by Wolves follows androids struggling to raise human children on a recently colonized planet torn by religious conflict. Finally, HBO Max also announced it had exclusive streaming rights for animated TV shows Rick and Morty and South Park.
