Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin Hired to Help Reboot Pirates of the Caribbean Franchise

Geek Tyrant reports that Disney hired Craig Mazin, creator of HBO’s miniseries Chernobyl, to pen the possible script for its Pirates of the Caribbean reboot. Mazin will work alongside Ted Elliott, who co-wrote the first four Pirates films. Chernobyl rightfully received accolades for its realistic depiction of the horrifying 1986 nuclear disaster. As its creator, producer, and head writer, Mazin bears the lion’s share for the show’s success. However, transitioning from stories about a near-apocalyptic disaster in Soviet Ukraine to high seas swashbuckling adventure is a big change.

People can’t seem to get enough of Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow. Over the last two decades, there have been five Pirates of the Caribbean movies. But after so much time, the franchise is feeling as stale as bilge water. While Disney might have tried for a new pirate-themed movie or even something even genuinely fresh, the studio is trying to produce a Pirates reboot instead. However, this project has been stuck in a cursed undead state for a while now. Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick tackled the reboot before dropping out of it. Depp is also out because of his legal troubles that the Mouse House doesn’t want to be associated with. Maybe Craig Mazin will be just the right person to restore this ailing but lucrative franchise with his radioactive touch.
