Blade Runner 2049 Retires Kingsman
Box Office Mojo reports that the sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi classic came in first at the last weekend’s box office, earning $32.7 million in US cinemas. However, it’s doubtful that Blade Runner 2049 will succeed in recuperating its costs. Even when one adds $40 million Denis Villeneuve’s (Arrival, Sicario) latest film earned so far overseas, this barely budged its $150 million production costs. But then again, original Blade Runner also flopped hard before becoming a cult sci-fi film.
In second place of the weekend box office is The Mountain Between Us. Based on a novel by Charles Martin and directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Hany Abu-Assad, this romantic adventure drama starring Idris Elba and Kate Winslet earned $10.5 million. In the third place, Pennywise the Clown still refuses to die, earning almost $10 million in its fifth weekend in the cinemas. In the fourth place is My Little Pony: The Movie with $8.8 million. Finally, Matthew Vaughn’s action spy comedy Kingsman: The Golden Circle is in the fifth place with $8.6 million, dropping from the first place where it spent last two weekends.

As part of the promotion for the second season of Netflix hit show Stranger Things, indie game developer BonusXP has released a free mobile game set in the comfortably nostalgic, yet horror-tinted world of Hawkins, Indiana. Well-received by players, Stranger Things: The Game comes with a neat little reward: those who finish the game get to see a new scene from the show’s upcoming second season. This comes atop news of the show’s latest teaser trailer announcing titles of the second season episodes. Last year, after Stranger Things caught the internet by storm, Netflix quickly released a crude teaser trailer with the titles of the second season episodes. Naturally, fans of the show began looking for hidden meanings. Netflix has now deliberately altered the episode titles, thus turning all the carefully woven fan theories upside down. Next season of Stranger Things comes out on Netflix on October 27.
Winter Is Coming… In 2019
Indiewire reports that Kit Harington (a.k.a. Jon Snow) recently announced he will marry Rose Leslie (a.k.a Ygritte) sometime during the filming of the last season of Game of Thrones. Since he invited the show’s entire cast to the wedding, filming will stop for a couple of days.
Before all of you eager fans grab your torches and pitchforks in righteous fury, Vanity Fair has some cold, hard news for you: with or without the wedding, there’s a very good chance that the last six episodes of Game of Thrones won’t air before spring of 2019. Back in July, rumors surfaced about HBO’s plans to make each of these episodes feature-length, which would demand more production time. Not only that but since all the show’s plotlines have finally begun converging, film crews can no longer film disparate scenes simultaneously. Finally, there’s also the extended post-production process. So even though we most probably won’t get to see Westeros until almost two years from now, at least we can be rest assured that the finale will truly be epic.
Gore Verbinski Revives Hope For That Gambit Movie
Gore Verbinski, director, and producer of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise is in talks with Fox executives about directing the standalone film about superhero Gambit, says Hollywood Reporter. This might mark a lucky break for a project stuck in a development hell for over two years now, despite Channing Tatum’s unwavering eagerness to portray the card-throwing Cajun X-Man.
Gambit’s first on-screen appearance was in the 2009 movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine where he was played by Taylor Kitsch. When the standalone Gambit movie was first announced in 2015, there were talks about either Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) or Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) directing. Over time, both of these directors dropped out due to conflicting schedules and other projects. Will Verbinski save Gambit? Only time will tell.
