Week-in-Review: Weekend Box Office, The Emmys, Halloween and Terminator

It Conquered the Box Office… Again!

It, a harrowing melodrama about a misunderstood clown bullied by a gang of juvenile delinquents, continued to rule the box office. Box Office Mojo reports that the movie adaptation of Stephen King’s bestselling horror novel earned $60 million in its second weekend. With its total gross being around $218 million after only ten days in cinemas, It stands a good chance of surpassing William Friedkin’s The Exorcist as the highest-rating R-rated horror movie of all times.

In second place is American Assassin, a spy thriller about a hitman (Dylan O’Brien) single-handedly winning the War on Terror. Produced for $33 million, American Assassin opened to $14.8 million. Darren Aronofsky’s latest movie mother! is in the third place. Despite a wide release and an impressive cast led by Jennifer Lawrence, mother! earned barely $7.5 million, with its F rating at Cinemascore suggesting a short theater life for this psychological horror. Reese Witherspoon’s Home Again fell to the fourth place, earning $5.3 million in its second weekend. The Hitman’s Bodyguard rounds up the top five list, earning $3.55 million in its fifth weekend and bringing its worldwide total over $142 million.

Winners of the 69th Emmy Awards

Last weekend saw the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony for the best primetime daytime programming. Hosted by the comedian Stephen Colbert, the Emmys featured a number of old favorites like Saturday Night Live that won four awards. However, there were some triumphant newcomers as well.

Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu’s adaptation of the dystopian sci-fi novel by Margaret Atwood, became the first TV show on a streaming platform to win an Emmy award for outstanding series. The show also won awards for its lead actress (Elisabeth Moss), supporting actress (Ann Dowd), as well as awards for its outstanding writing and direction. HBO’s darkly humorous miniseries Big Little Lies won awards for outstanding limited series as well as awards for performances by Nicole Kidman and Alexander Skarsgard. San Junipero, an episode of Charlie Brooker’s sci-fi anthology series Black Mirror won two Emmys, including one for the best writing for a limited series or a movie. Here is the complete list of 2017 Emmy winners.

Jamie Lee Curtis Will Appear in the New Halloween Movie

Last week Jamie Lee Curtis tweeted she’ll be appearing in the next Halloween movie thus proving that the franchise, just like Michael Myers, simply refuses to die. Produced by Universal Pictures, director of this sequel will be American filmmaker David Gordon Green (Your Highness, Pineapple Express) who will also co-write the script with the comedian Danny McBride. The upcoming Halloween sequel comes out on October 19th, 2018.

Written and directed by John Carpenter in 1978, the original Halloween movie not only brought fame to young Jamie Lee Curtis but also helped start the sub-genre of slasher horror. Over the last forty years, Halloween had seven sequels (three of them featuring Curtis) as well as Rob Zombie’s reboot which had its own sequel. While hiring people best known for their comedic work to create a Halloween sequel does seem peculiar, it’s far from the worst thing that ever happened to this venerable franchise.

Linda Hamilton Returns in the Terminator Sequel

In another news about a seemingly unnecessary sequel, James Cameron just announced that Linda Hamilton, the original Sarah Connor, will appear alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in the new Terminator movie. According to Hollywood Reporter, Cameron will produce and co-write this sequel while the direction will be handled by Tim Miller, the filmmaker behind the highly successful Deadpool.

This as-yet-unnamed Terminator movie will ignore all the sequels made after Terminator 2: Judgment Day, which is what the fans of the franchise have done for decades anyway. This news also confirms that the attempt to reboot the franchise with the new actors and altered timeline in 2015’s Terminator Genisys is officially dead… Unless someone decides to somehow bring in the characters played by Emilia Clarke and Jai Courtney into this movie as well. While this does seem unlikely, there once was a time when the idea of a sixth Terminator movie sounded silly as well.
