I-Marcus News Briefs: Shudder’s Creepshow Casting Takes Shape, Live-Action Akira Still Moving Forward With Director Taika Waititi And The Convent Trailer

    Shudder’s Creepshow Casting Takes Shape

Streaming service Shudder’s casting for its new horror anthology Creepshow (a reboot if you will of the popular horror films from the 80’s) is taking shape with the addition of several well-known actors. So far these include Tobin Bell (Saw), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad) and veteran actress Adrienne Barbeau (The Fog, Swamp Thing).

The new series is set to premiere later this year.

I can’t say that I’ve seen any original programming from Shudder. I tried the app out on my X-box One and frankly the interface was so spectacularly bad that I never returned to it. The movie selection was also not very encouraging. Perhaps this new series signals an improvement in quality all around.

Live-Action Akira Still Moving Forward With Director Taika Waititi

Taika Waititi, director of Thor: Ragnoroak and What We Do In The Shadows is still attached to the live action adaptation of Akira with Leonardo DiCaprio listed as a producer. The film is slated to be shot in California.

Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo has apparently given his blessing to the script.

“When it comes to Akira I have already finished the original manga and my own anime version too. So in that sense, I am basically done with Akira. If someone wants to do something new with Akira then I am mostly okay with that. As I accepted the offer for a live-action Akira to be made, so I am generally okay with whatever they want to do with it. However, I did give one major condition to a live-action version and that is that I had to check and approve the scenario.”

    Whatever.

I’m going to say something controversial in the geek community. I’m not a fan of this guy’s work. I thought Thor: Ragnarok was silly trash. I thought Thor: The Dark World was the best one out of the bunch, suck on those eggs. I think this guy is a happy idiot. The last thing I want is this simple fool to be around Akira one of my favorite stories of all time. This git lacks the gravitas and steel to bring merit to the subject matter. If I haven’t made it clear enough I don’t like this guy!

I was already highly skeptical of an American remake of this property and this pretty much eradicates all interest I have in it.

    Convent Trailer

Written by Paul Hyett and Conal Palmer and Directed by Paul Hyett The Convent gives us the story of a young woman who is spared execution only to discover a more dire fate lying in wait deep within a convent.

Nothing like a little vertical wall-slithering to get the blood pumping. This trailer had some pretty decent visuals, especially the beginning scene. I see they also dug up that old fossil Michael Ironside to show the whippersnappers how to properly chew scenery so that’s a bonus. Glowy eyes, demons, chicks in chains, what’s not to like?

    Definite Saturday evening streaming material.
