Taika Waititi Adapting Terry Gilliam’s Time Bandits For TV

Taika Waititi is tackling a TV adaptation of Terry Gilliam’s fantasy adventure film Time Bandits, says Deadline. The New Zealand filmmaker will co-write and direct the pilot of this potential new TV series for the upcoming Apple streaming service. This is the first news about this project since Apple announced it last July. Gilliam himself discussed adapting Time Bandits into a TV series back in 2015. Since then however, he has been busy both promoting and battling to secure the release rights for his passion project The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

Taika Waititi is best known for his 2014 farcical mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows as well as for 2017 Thor: Ragnarok – by far the best of all Thors and possibly Ragnaroks as well. With his blend of grim yet whimsical humor, Waititi may be a perfect guy to develop a refreshed version of Gilliam’s cult classic. Released in 1981, Time Bandits tells a story of a group of thieves traveling through time and space accompanied by an 11-year old boy named Kevin (Craig Warnock). This was Terry Gilliam’s second feature film after the breakup of the Monty Python troupe.

The Last Kids on Earth Coming to Netflix

GeekTyrant reports that Netflix is developing an animated TV series titled The Last Kids on Earth. The series is based on a best-selling series of children’s novels written by Max Brallier and illustrated by Douglas Holgate. Netflix has assembled a killer voice cast that, among others, includes the likes of Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead), Keith David (They Live, The Thing), Rosario Dawson (Marvel’s Daredevil), Mark Hamill (Star Wars) and Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice).

First published in 2015, The Last Kids on Earth follows Jack Sullivan, a 13-year old kid who finds himself among the rare survivors of the zombie apocalypse. When not playing video games and enjoying junk food in his tree house, Jack is battling hordes of zombies and all kinds of other B-movie monstrosities. He is joined by his former schoolmates like his geeky best friend Quint, reformed school bully Dirk, Jack’s crush June and his pet monster Rover. Since 2015, Brallier and Holgate co-created three other novels in the series: The Last Kids on Earth and the Zombie Parade (2016), The Last Kids on Earth and the Nightmare King (2017) and The Last Kids on Earth and the Cosmic Beyond (2018). The Last Kids on Earth is being produced by Atomic Cartoons and is set for a release later this year.
