Week-in-review: Weekend Box Office, Spider-Verse Sequels And BBC’s Dracula

    Ralph Breaks the Box Office

Ralph Breaks the Internet arrived in cinemas and immediately wrecked it, grossing over $84,4 million throughout the five days of Thanksgiving weekend. According to the Box Office Mojo, this result is second only to Disney’s Frozen that, in 2013, earned $93,6 million during the same period. Even by only looking at data from Friday to Sunday – 23rd to 25th November – Ralph Breaks the Internet nevertheless wins the weekend by grossing $55,6 million.

Second place of the last weekend’s box office brought another new contender. Creed II is a sequel to a 2015 sports drama Creed that itself continued the events from Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky films. While Creed introduced us to Apollo Creed’s (Carl Weathers) son Adonis (Michael B. Jordan), Creed II re-introduces us to their nemesis Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) and his son Viktor (Florian Munteanu). Creed II earned $35,3 million in its opening weekend. In the third place is Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch with $30,2 million. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is in fourth place with $29,6 million, having dropped sharply from last weekend’s first place. Finally, in the fifth place of the last weekend’s box office is the musical biopic Bohemian Rhapsody with $13,8 million.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Gets Sequels

Even though we’re still weeks away from the worldwide premiere of CGI-animated superhero film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, its trailers have created so much positive buzz that Sony is already planning new movies set in the same cinematic universe!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the first of them is a straightforward sequel. This one will be written by David Callaham (Wonder Woman 1984, Zombieland 2) and directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, best known for his work on the cartoon series Avatar: The Last Airbender and Netflix’s Voltron series. The other Spider-Verse film is a spinoff focusing on female heroes in the Spider-Man universe. This one will be penned by Bek Smith (TV series Zoo) and most probably directed by Lauren Montgomery (Batman: Year One, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse). Spider-Verse producers Amy Pascal, Phil Lord and Chris Miller will all be involved in these new movies as well.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse follows the adventures of Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore – Dope) who, to his surprise, not only discovers his superpowers but also gets to meet various spider-powered people from alternate realities, including Spider-Gwen (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld – True Grit), Spider-Ham (voiced by standup comedian John Mulaney) and Spider-Man Noir (voiced by Nicolas Cage).

    BBC’s Dracula Casts Its Vampire

In October, Variety reported that Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat – creators of BBC’s Sherlock – have set their eyes on yet another classic character from Victorian literature: Count Dracula. The creative duo behind the modern re-imaging of the Victorian über-detective announced their plans of turning Bram Stoker’s 1897 gothic horror classic into a miniseries consisting of three feature-length episodes that will air on BBC (in the United Kingdom) and on Netflix (everywhere else).

Apparently, it didn’t take Gatiss and Moffat long to find their vampire. As Entertainment Weekly just announced, the role of the immortal Valachian nobleman will be played by Claes Kasper Bang, 51-year old Danish actor and musician. Bang recently appeared in the crime thriller The Girl in the Spider’s Web, a sequel to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – late Stieg Larsson’s best-selling book series as well as a soft reboot of a David Fincher’s 2011 adaptation. Claes Bang also starred alongside Elizabeth Moss (Handmaiden’s Tale) and Dominic West (Tomb Raider) in the satirical drama The Square that won Palme d’Or in the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.

The filming of this new adaptation of Dracula begins in 2019.
