Netflix Sued by Satanists!

A group of Satanists called the Satanic Temple filed a lawsuit against Netflix and Warner Bros Entertainment over a particular statue featured in the new series ‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’. They are seeking at least $50 Million in damages over copyright infringement.

From Bruce Lederman, the lawyer representing the Satanic Temple:

“This case presents, among other things, a textbook example of the hornbook explanation of copyright protection that copyright law protects unique expressions, but not the ideas themselves. What makes this case particularly striking and significant is that it arises in the context of Defendants who are highly sophisticated media production and distribution companies which blatantly misappropriated Plaintiff’s unique expression of an idea even though they have a long history of vigorously protecting their own intellectual property.”

According to Temple, the show depicted the goat-headed Baphomet, a historical deity the Temple says was created in part to “promote the First Amendment values of separation of church and state and equal protection.”

The Satanic Temple is upset not only because of the usage of the likeness but the context in which it was used:
