It’s Venom vs. Lady Gaga!
For the second week in a row, it was beauty vs. brawn as Tom Hardy and Lady Gaga waged battle for the first place, says Box Office Mojo. Venom, Sony’s latest superhero blockbuster, is once again at the top of the weekend box office, having earned a bit over $35 million in cinemas. Meanwhile, Bradley Cooper ‘s A Star is Born is in the second place with $28,4 million.
In the third place of the weekend’s box office is the historical biopic First Man with $16 million. Based on a book by James A. Hansen, First Man follows the life of Neil Armstrong (played in the movie by Ryan Gosling – Portal Mechanic), the first man to walk on Moon. Directed by Damien Chazelle (Whiplash, La La Land), the film features Kyle Chandler (Argo), Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty), and Claire Foy (The Crown). In the fourth place is yet another book adaptation – Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween. A sequel to a 2015 movie Goosebumps that was, in turn, based on a series of children’s horror novels by R. L. Stine, Ari Sandel’s Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween earned $15,8 million in its opening weekend. The list of the top five highest-grossing movies of the weekend closes off with Smallfoot, a CGI-animated children’s film that earned $9 million in its third week in cinemas.
The Flash Movie Will be Late… Again
Just like the DC Comics superhero it’s inspired by, The Flash movie is slowly and painfully crawling forward. According to Variety, shooting of the film has been postponed once again due to script issues as well as because movie’s lead Ezra Miller is scheduled to film the third Fantastic Beasts movie in 2019. What all this means is that shooting of The Flash won’t begin at least until late next year, with the release date being sometime around the invention of anti-gravity.
Production of The Flash began in 2016 and since then it faced a number of setbacks. In April 2016, movie’s director Seth Grahame Smith (author of Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter) dropped out of the project. It’s successor, Rick Famuyiwa (The Confirmation, Brown Sugar) also left in October of the same year due to creative differences. In January 2017, Joby Harold (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) was hired to rewrite the script. By mid-2017 it was announced that the movie’s title will be Flashpoint, thus implying it will be based on a highly popular comic book story arc of the same title. It was in January 2018 that the studio finally settled on John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein (screenwriters of Spider-Man: Homecoming) as the movie’s new directors. All these fits and stops weren’t helped by Warner Bros executives growing antsy about DCEU after last year’s Justice League failed to earn insane amounts of money, delivering instead merely ridiculous amounts of cash.
True Detective Season 3 Release Date, First Images Revealed
The third season of HBO’s anthology crime series True Detective will premiere on January 13, 2019, reports the AV Club. Stephen Dorff (Blade) and Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) will portray police detectives Roland West and Wayne Hays as they investigate a grisly crime in rural Arkansas. Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin, Green Room) directed the first two episodes while all of them were written or co-written by the series creator Nic Pizzolatto.
The first season of True Detective premiered in 2014. Featuring an amazing performance by Matthew McConaughey that almost single-handedly resuscitated his career, True Detective was met with critical accolades and hundreds of internet memes. When the second season of the show rolled out a year later, it couldn’t possibly live up to the hype. While featuring Colin Farrell (In Bruges), Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights), Rachel McAdams (State of Play), Kelly Reilly (Sherlock Holmes) and Vince Vaughn (Swingers), the second season of True Detective was nevertheless met with lackluster reviews. It remains to be seen if Pizzolatto and HBO succeeded in recapturing the dark, hypnotic magic of the first season. After all, this season will feature not two, but three separate timelines, which could mathematically make it up to 33% better than the first one… Or not.
