Week-in-review: Weekend Box Office, Primetime Emmys, and Mr. Spock As A Vampire

The Predator Overpowers The Nun… Or Does It?

Shane Black’s sci-fi actioner The Predator conquered last weekend’s box office by earning $24 million, says Box Office Mojo. Featuring Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones), Sterling K. Brown (Hotel Artemis), Thomas Jane (The Expanse), Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele) and Olivia Munn (X-Men: Apocalypse), The Predator follows a group of PTSD-afflicted veterans as they hunt the infamous alien hunter on a Halloween night in the idyllic American suburb. It is a concept that almost sounds like a parody but, hey, it can’t possibly be worse than Alien vs. Predator, right?

In the second place is the supernatural horror film The Nun with $18,2 million. While this is a big step down from the last weekend’s $53,8 million, overall this is a great success for a movie with a budget of $22 million. Paul Feig’s thriller A Simple Favor is in the third place with $16 million. This adaptation of a 2017 novel by Darcey Bell stars Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect) and Blake Lively (The Age of Adaline).  In the fourth place of the weekend box office is White Boy Rick with $8,8 million. This crime comedy-drama features, among others, Bruce Dern (The Hateful Eight), Jennifer Jason Leigh (also The Hateful Eight) and Matthew McConaughey (True Detective). Finally, the fifth place belongs to the romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians that earned $8,7 million.

Mr. Spock to Play a Vampire in AMC’s New Horror Series

Variety reports that Zachary Quinto (Mr. Spock in J. J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot films) will star in AMC’s upcoming adaptation of Joe Hill’s best-selling horror novel NOS4A2. Quinto will play the role of the novel’s villain Charlie Manx, an ancient vampire who preys on children, feeding on their youth. Quinto will appear opposite Australian actress Ashleigh Cummings, who’ll portray the novel’s heroine Vic McQueen, a gritty and resourceful working-class artist who stumbles upon a hidden domain ruled over by Manx.

Over the last decade, Joe Hill – son of the popular horror writer Stephen King – emerged as a successful and critically acclaimed writer of his own. His novel Horns was adapted into a 2013 movie starring Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter movies) while Netflix is developing a TV series based on Hill’s comic book series Locke & Key. AMC first acquired rights for NOS4A2 in 2015 and finally greenlighted the TV adaptation this April, with Jami O’Brien (Fear The Walking Dead, Hell On Wheels) as its show runner. The filming of NOS4A2 began this week in Rhode Island. Alongside Quinto and Cummings, NOS4A2 will also feature Virginia Kull, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Olafur Darri Olafsson and Jahkara Smith. The series will air sometime next year with a 10-episode season.
