Way back when Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) came out I said to myself that this was eventually going to be a mainstay medium for movies. That is…uber realism, completely computer generated. It hasn’t happened yet…but it’s coming. Especially as the issues with dealing with live actors becomes more and more precarious (and the hardware and software required to make it becomes cheaper and more accessible). I think the one hang-up was finding the right subject matter. The medium needed a niche in which to gestate and evolve. I believe it found that niche in the video game genre.
Here is a cool gameplay clip for Shadow of the Tomb Raider. I don’t have time to play games these days unfortunately so I’m more interested in the cutscene, but it does look like it would be fun to play…sigh.
