Tom Cruise Still Holding On
For the second weekend in a row, Mission: Impossible – Fallout managed to climb its way to the top, just like the way Tom Cruise climbed the sides of Burj Khalifa in 2011’s Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Last weekend saw M: I – Fallout – the latest movie in the series – earn $35,3 million, raising its total gross up to $124,8 million. This data comes courtesy of the Box Office Mojo.
In the second place of the last weekend’s box office was Disney’s Christopher Robin. Continuing the story of 1977’s animated film The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh that was, in turn, based on a children’s book by the British writer A. A. Milne, this fantasy film follows adult Christopher Robin (played by Ewan McGregor) as he once again meets with his creepy, CGI-animated childhood toys that will either make him rediscover the magic of childhood or go insane. So far, the movie earned $24,5 million domestically in its opening weekend. Spy comedy The Spy Who Dumped Me is in the third place with $12,1 million. The fourth place belongs to the musical Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again with a bit over $9 million while in the fifth place of the last weekend’s box office is the action thriller The Equalizer 2 with $8,7 million.
Supergirl Movie in the Works
Deadline reports that DC Films and Warner Bros are developing a feature film about Supergirl, alias Kara Zor-E. This isn’t that much of a surprise. After all, last winter’s Zack Snyder/Joss Whedon’s Justice League film performed worse than expected at the box office while Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman was a huge success, proving there is a profit in movies about female superheroes. Among other things, this caused Geoff Johns to step down from the head position at DC Films and pursue other projects, which we previously covered. Supergirl movie will be penned by Oren Uziel who also worked on movies such as The Cloverfield Paradox and 22 Jump Street.
While we’re on the subject of female-led superhero movies, DC continues to work on their Birds of Prey film about Gotham City’s female vigilantes and villains teaming up against the dark threats of their city. TheWrap has just announced that the movie’s villain will be Black Mask, a former rich socialite who murdered his parents, lost his inheritance and then became a mob boss. Birds of Prey movie is being written by Christina Hodson and directed by Cathy Yan. Margot Robbie will not only reprise her role of Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad but help produce this film as well.
Jean-Luc Picard Is Coming Back!
Last week, Patrick Stewart made a surprise appearance at the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention, announcing he’ll be returning to the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. According to an article by Deadline, Stewart will headline the new Star Trek series for CBS All Access. This series will follow the legendary captain in the latter days of his life, meaning this won’t be the reboot nor the straightforward sequel to Star Trek: The Next Generation. Alongside Stewart’s performance as Professor X in the X-Men movies, it was his role of a principled yet enlightened captain of the USS Enterprise that made this British actor famous all over the globe.
While this news is, by itself, worth cheering for, it’s worth remembering the recent troubles of the Star Trek franchise. The project will be led by Alex Kurtzman, who helped co-create both the film Star Trek Into Darkness and the TV show Star Trek: Discovery. Both of these received mixed reactions from audiences and reviewers alike. However, after the behind-the-scenes troubles during the filming of Discovery, Kurtzman has signed a five-year contract with CBS to help the network develop a number of new Star Trek properties: mainly new shows and a miniseries.
