Tom Cruise Climbs To The Top
Ever since Brian de Palma directed the first Mission: Impossible movie back in 1996, this franchise not only remained popular with the audiences but somehow, impossibly, managed to top each of its five movies with the next one. Featuring death-defying stunts by its star Tom Cruise, Mission: Impossible also picked up a decent roster of co-stars along the way, including Alec Baldwin, Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan, Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames. The latest entry in the series – titled Mission: Impossible – Fallout – came out last week and immediately rose to the top of the weekend box office. Featuring Angela Basset and Henry Cavill, Mission: Impossible – Fallout earned $61,5 million in its opening weekend making it, according to the Box Office Mojo, the best movie opening for any movie starring Tom Cruise.
In the second place of the last weekend’s box office list is the musical Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. This prequel and a sequel to a 2008 musical Mamma Mia! earned $15 million in its second weekend. Crime thriller The Equalizer 2 starring Denzel Washington is in the third place with $14 million while animated family adventure Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation is in the fourth place with $12,3 million. The top five list concludes with the Teen Titans Go! to the Movies. This animated feature film based on the long-running DC superhero cartoon Teen Titans Go! earned $10,5 million in its opening weekend.
Netflix Announces Release Dates For Stranger Things, Sabrina and Maniac
According to AVClub, At the recently held Television Critics Association summer press tour, streaming service Netflix announced that the third season of its flagship show Stranger Things won’t return until the summer of 2019 citing the ambition of the show’s creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, “to deliver something bigger and better than what they did last year”.
While we’re waiting for the new adventures pitting the kids of Hawkins, Indiana against otherworldly horrors, AVClub also reported about several upcoming Netflix shows that might fill up the void in our souls. Previously, we wrote about the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a darker, ominous take on Archie Comics’ Sabrina the Teenage Witch, as envisioned by the comic book and TV writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Featuring Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will premiere a week before Halloween on October the 26.
Finally, there’s Maniac, a darkly comedic TV show starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill as a pair of strangers drawn together in a voluntary drug trial hosted by a totally not sinister pharmaceutical corporation in which most assuredly nothing will go wrong. Based on a 2014 Norwegian TV show of the same name created by Hakon Bast Mossige and Espen PA Lervaag, US version of Maniac was developed by True Detective’s Cary Fukunaga and will be released on September 21st.
Filming of the Next Terminator Film Begins
Good news for all you die-hard Terminator fans out there: the filming of the next movie in the series has already begun. This news comes courtesy of the AVClub that, in turn, echoes the recent video statement by Arnold Schwarzenegger after he had to excuse himself from an event held by the prime minister of Fiji. This week also saw Paramount Pictures release the first official teaser image for the upcoming Terminator movie on their Twitter page.
The upcoming Terminator flick will be helmed by Tim Miller, director of the first Deadpool film. Linda Hamilton will reprise her role of Sarah Connor that made her famous. She will be joined by co-stars Natalia Reyes as well as by Mackenzie Davis who appeared in last year’s Blade Runner 2049 and in TV shows such as Halt and Catch Fire and Black Mirror. Gabriel Luna, best known for his portrayal of Ghost Rider on the TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been hired to play the new Terminator. Finally, Schwarzenegger himself will most probably also appear in the film. The only question now is will the movie actually be any good. If you’ve seen any of the sequels made in the decades after the first two James Cameron movies, you already know the answer to that question.
