Solo Barely at the Top
In its second weekend in cinemas, Solo: A Star Wars Story managed to hold the first place in the box office, but only barely. According to Box Office Mojo, the latest Star Wars film that features Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Ceasar!), Donald Glover (Community) and Woody Harrelson (True Detective) suffered a serious slump: after grossing $103 million in its opening weekend, Solo earned only about $29,4 million last weekend, signaling the audience’s somewhat diminished interest in the Star Wars franchise.
Solo: A Star Wars Story was almost overtaken by Deadpool 2. Now in its third weekend in cinemas, Marvel’s blockbuster about an indestructible manic assassin earned $23,2 million. In the third place is Adrift, a romantic adventure drama featuring Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin as a young couple that finds itself stranded in the middle of Pacific on a damaged ship without a radio. Adrift earned 11,6 million in its opening weekend. After six weeks in cinemas, Avengers: Infinity War is still among the top five movies, managing to gross $10,5 million last weekend. Finally, in the fifth place of the last weekend’s box office is the romantic comedy Book Club with a bit over $7 million.
Top Gun Sequel in the Works
Once again proving that everything old is new again, Tom Cruise recently confirmed the news about the upcoming sequel to one of the eightiest movie of the eighties by tweeting out the first pic from the set of the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick. According to a recent article by The Hollywood Reporter, not only will Cruise return to the role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell that made him famous around the world back in 1986, but Val Kilmer will also reprise his role of Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.

Top Gun sequel is one of those movies Hollywood has been talking about for over a decade. Speculations temporarily stopped in 2012 after the untimely death of Top Gun‘s director Tony Scott. Now, however, the sequel has a new director. 44-years old Joseph Kosinski made his big-screen debut in 2010 with Tron: Legacy – another sequel to a beloved 1980s pop culture artifact. Kosinski also already successfully collaborated with Cruise in 2013 on a post-apocalyptic sci-fi film Oblivion, based on Kosinski’s own unpublished graphic novel. Paramount is releasing Top Gun: Maverick in July 2019 so get ready to bawl your eyes out to Berlin’s Take My Breath Away while hiding your manly tears behind Ray-Ban sunglasses.
Legion Renewed for a Third Season
Variety recently reported that FX decided to renew its superhero TV show Legion for a third season. According to the channel’s programming co-president Eric Schrier, the network is “incredibly proud of Noah Hawley’s achievement” and is “honored to continue the series as it pushes the boundaries of conventional television storytelling”.
The show’s creator, Noah Hawley made a name for himself by creating a TV show based on the Coen Brothers’ Academy Award-winning crime drama Fargo – a project that shouldn’t have worked but somehow did. Hawley continued to prove his prowess in Legion – a show about Marvel’s superhero (played in the show by Dan Stevens – Downton Abbey) who suffers from a multiple-personality disorder. Depending on whom you’re talking to, Legion is either a psychedelic brain-teaser or a colossal exercise in style over substance. However, it’s difficult to deny that the show featuring, among others, Aubrey Plaza (Parks & Recreation) and Jemaine Clement (What We Do in the Shadows) does stretch the limits of the superhero genre to the breaking point, featuring Bollywood dance scenes and being, in parts, an homage to the British cult classic show The Prisoner.
The third season of Legion will air in 2019.
