Giant Robots Shatter Their Way to the Top
After spending five weeks in a row at the top of the box office, Black Panther was finally unseated by Pacific Rim Uprising – a sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 sci-fi blockbuster Pacific Rim. Set a decade after the events of the first film, Pacific Rim Uprising follows Jake Pentecost (John Boyega – Star Wars: The Last Jedi) and Nate Lambert (Scott Eastwood – The Fate of the Furious) as they train to fight using the giant robots and once again stop the extra-dimensional invasion. According to the Box Office Mojo, Pacific Rim Uprising earned a bit over $28.1 million in its opening weekend.
While Black Panther may have dropped to the second place in its sixth weekend in cinemas, it nevertheless earned respectable $17 million. It also broke the record for the most successful superhero film in history by grossing over $630 million domestically. In the third place of the last weekend’s box office is the Christian biopic I Can Only Imagine with $13.6 million. In the fourth place, with $10.6 million, is the children’s computer-animated film Sherlock Gnomes. Finally, in the fifth place of the box office is the action-adventure movie Tomb Raider with $10.1 million.
Stranger Things Season 3 Details Emerge
As they’re getting ready to start filming the third season of the hit series Stranger Things, the cast and the creatives of the show held a Q&A conference in front of a live audience at Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the third season will take place in summer of 1985 – about a year after the events depicted in the second season. Former douche bag Steve (Joe Keery) will have a more prominent role in the story as a good guy, along Lucas’ (Caleb McLaughlin) sister Erica (Priah Ferguson). The show will also introduce a new character named Robin (played by Maya Thurman-Hawke).
Stranger Things was first released on Netflix in October 2016. Set in the sleepy mid-western town in the early 1980s, the show follows a group of kids as they investigate the grisly mysteries near the secret government facility. Created by the brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, Stranger Things became a global phenomenon, partly due to the way it deliberately evoked the early movies of directors such as Steven Spielberg and John Carpenter.
There’s a Street Fighter TV Show in Works…
Deadline reports that Entertainment One/Mark Gordon has just agreed to film a live-action TV show loosely based on the popular Street Fighter series of computer games with Joey Ansah, Jacqueline Quella, and Mark Wooding. In 2014, this trio of producers created Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist – a 12-episode web series that was first released on Machinima. Their Street Fighter TV show will focus on four characters from the game – Ryu, Ken, Guile, and Chun-Li – as they travel the world competing in the World Warrior Tournament organized by the elusive criminal mastermind M. Bison.
Street Fighter originated as an arcade game in 1987 and, over the next thirty years and number of sequels, became one of the most successful video game franchises in the world. Street Fighter games inspired a number of animated shows as well as the much-maligned 1994 action movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile and the late, great Raul Julia as M. Bison.
… while Locke & Key TV Pilot is Being Passed On… Again
According to Deadline, the executives at Hulu decided to pass on their adaptation of the critically acclaimed horror comic book Locke & Key. The show was to be written by the comic book’s creator Joe Hill and directed by Andy Muschietti, who helmed last year’s stunningly successful movie adaptation of Stephen King’s horror novel It. Apparently, Hulu passed on the pilot after the change in the management even though the studio already finished the casting process, assembled a full writers room and built the sets for the show.
Created by Hill and illustrated by Gabriel Rodríguez, Locke & Key follows a trio of children as they learn an unsettling history behind the old Gothic manor they just moved in and its many mysterious keys that unlock strange powers. First published in 2008, this comic book was already turned into a TV pilot once. In 2011, FOX ordered a pilot written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Fringe) and starring Sarah Bolger (Into the Badlands), Miranda Otto (Lord of the Rings) and Mark Pellegrino (Supernatural). While the pilot did eventually leak to the internet, the show itself was never picked on by the network.
