Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum Teaser Trailer #1

The theatrical distribution rights for the Korean horror film Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum was recently sold by Showbox ( one of the largest film distribution companies in South Korea ) to 47 countries.

    Film synopsis:

“In 1979, 42 patients at Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital killed themselves and the hospital director went missing. Rumors and strange stories about the now abandoned Gonjiam Mental Hospital abound. An internet broadcaster and 6 other people decide to enter the abandoned hospital to experience unbridled fear. They begin to stream live video from inside the hospital. “

Well, let’s see what all the hubbub is about:

I am deeply, deeply disappointed in you South Korea. You have put out some stellar horror films in the past but to pick-up that dirty, fetid rat known as ‘found footage’ and parade it around as if it doesn’t stink to high heaven is just shameful. The found footage genre became anathema to me almost a decade ago. Rightfully abandoned by those with talent, it became relegated to cheap, unimaginative hack directors who wanted to jump on the back of a horse that has long been ridden to death.

Oh well, now I know…and knowing is half the battle.

Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum starring Seung-Wook Lee, Ye-Won Mun, Ji-Hyun Park and Sung-Hoon Park is scheduled for release March 28.
