Emily Blunt Is Mary Poppins Ya’ll!

Directed by Rob Marshall (Nine, (2009), Into the Woods (2014)) and written by David Magee (Finding Neverland, (2004), Life of Pi (2012)) Mary Poppins Returns stars Emily Blunt The Girl on the Train, 2016 as the titular character Mary Poppins. Poppins of course, is a magical English Nanny first introduced through a series of children’s books by P.L.Travers and arguably made famous by the 1964 Walt Disney film Mary Poppins starring the legendary Julie Andrews. This film is to serve as a sequel to that 1964 hit, taking place 25 years after the events in that took place.

    IMDB synopsis:

“In Depression-era London, a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.”

It takes a lot of brass from someone inhabiting the least creative era of film history to take on a topic like Mary Poppins. There’s not a lot to garner from the trailer…but the addition of Lin-Manuel Miranda has my spider-sense a buzzing. “Oh Toruk, you’re reading way too much into this…the movie will be fine”.   Yeah yeah…look, if you have a scene with this guy lecturing the kids on their ‘White privilege’ and complaining about who the ‘really oppressed’ are don’t come running to me about how they screwed up Mary Poppins. I’m just saying…hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

Mary Poppins Returns starring Mary Poppins, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Emily Mortimer, Ben Whishaw, Colin Firth and Meryl Streep floats into theaters December 25, 2018.
