From Deadline. The CW, who is rebooting the previous WB/UPN sci-fi series Roswell (based off of the book series Roswell High by Melinda Metz) has found its lead in Jeanine Mason. Mason appears in the lateset season of Grey’s Anatomy and has appeared in series like Bunheads (2013) and Of Kings and Prophets (2016). Mason got her start as a dancer, winning season 5 of the show “So You Think You Can Dance”.
The reboot, which is being called a ‘reimaging’ will be written by Carina Adly MacKenzie, who has a writing credit for 36 episodes of CW’s The Originals, and will be directed by Julie Plec.
Synopsis:
“Reluctantly returning to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, New Mexico, Liz Ortecho (Mason), a jaded biomedical researcher and the daughter of undocumented immigrants, is haunted by a tragic incident. She discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: He’s an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life. She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins, but when a violent attack and long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance.”
Toruk’s Take
For a teenage angst series I thought Roswell was decent enough. The theme song was catchy and most of the female cast was sexy as all get out. Can’t comment on the guys much, save that Jason Behr had some distractingly large ears. I don’t know anything about Jeanine Mason except that apparently, she can dance. As usual, I don’t see a point to most remakes or reboots, there are plenty of new stories and creators to tap into but then that’s Hollywood for you. The undocumented parent’s angle is a warning flag. At best it’s more silly virtue-signaling that the writers are going to completely forget about in a season, at worst, it’s the first in a foray of foisted progressive agendas.
Proceed with caution.
