Crime drama Tokyo Vice is adding more actors to its cast, says GeekTyrant. So far, the series signed on Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver), Rachel Keller (Fargo), Rinko Kikuchi (Pacific Rim), Ella Rumpf (Raw), and Ken Watanabe (Godzilla: King of the Monsters). Presently, several additional actors joined the show, including Ito Hideaki (Tokkai), Kasamatsu Sho (Flowers and Rain), and Yamashita Tomohisa (The Man from Toronto).
Tokyo Vice is a long-gestating project by Michael Mann, the award-winning filmmaker behind crime thrillers like Collateral, Heat, Manhunter, Public Enemies and Thief. The series is based on a 2009 memoir of the same title by Jake Adelstein. The book chronicles his years working as the sole non-native journalist in one of Japan’s largest newspapers. During his time in Tokyo, Adelstein reported about organized crime. In 2009, he left Japan after receiving death threats from the yakuza.
In 2013, Adelstein wrote a film adaptation of his book alongside the playwright J. T. Rogers (Oslo). In 2019, the project was turned into a TV series, receiving a ten-episode order by the streaming service HBO Max. Principal photography began in spring 2020. Then the pandemic happened. The production resumed in November last year and finally ended this June.
Tokyo Vice should premiere sometime in 2022.
