Last weekend, the 73rd annual Emmy Awards ceremony took place in Downtown Los Angeles, California. Hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, the ceremony aimed to award the best in last year’s TV entertainment, as chosen by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The competition was intense: Apple TV’s Ted Lasso received thirteen nominations, followed by Netflix’s The Crown and Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale (eleven nominations each). Hamilton received nine nominations, and WandaVision secured eight nominations. HBO’s Mare of Easttown was nominated in seven categories, while HBO Max’s Hacks and Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit received six nominations each.
So, how did the awards go? As is often the case with Emmys, a handful of shows ended up dominating the ceremony. Last year it was the series Schitt’s Creek. This year, it was the Apple TV+ sports comedy series Ted Lasso. The show won an award for the Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (for Jason Sudeikis), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Brett Goldstein), as well as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (for Hannah Waddingham).
The other notable winner of the evening was Netflix’s prestige drama The Crown. Besides collecting the award for the Outstanding Drama Series, it also won awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Josh O’Connor), Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series (for Olivia Colman), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (Tobias Menzies), and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (Gillian Anderson).
HBO Max’s dramedy series Hacks won for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (Jean Smart), Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series (Lucia Aniello), and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series (Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky). The Queen’s Gambit won for the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series; Hamilton won the award for the Outstanding Variety Special, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver won the Outstanding Variety Talk Series.
